Aufklärer is a German Recon unit. A vital part of military warfare, recon units should always be fielded by the player. Their main job, as indicated, is to scout surroundings and they accordingly do not have any noteworthy combat abilities. The two-man team is a stealthy unit that gathers information about enemy dispositions. They often arrive with transport units that boast firepower of varying strength, such as the SPW 222 or the SPW 221.
The British and American equivalent of the Aufklärer are Recce and Recon, respectively.
Overview
Reconnaissance is one of the most important assets to a military operation, gathering information about non-friendly surroundings and enemy troop dispositions. The recon branch is divided in many subdivisions, ranging from aerial reconnaissance to reconnaissance-in-force to hit-and-run tactics. The Aufklärer fit into neither of these latter two tactics, as they are too fragile in men and too weak in weaponry to attack any enemy. What the unit does excel in, however, is the recon that is never seen. This unit can sit undisturbed for an entire game, gaining valuable intelligence during that entire time period.
Strategy
The Aufklärer squad consists only of two men carrying close-range MP40s and cannot survive lengthy exchanges of fire (and cannot fight beyond 100m). Their best way of staying alive is to stay concealed.
They often come with armed transport, such as the SPW 222 or the Kubel MG, both of which can be useful as fire support.
