Shatrafniki are Soviet Penal troops. These were troops who were convicted of desertion or cowardice under Order No. 227 or people of the Gulag labor camp system to serve their prison sentence. These troops were able to return to normal service depending on their commander's opinion or heroic achievements of the battlefield, or be discharged if they were wounded in combat.
