The Odon river witnessed two major battles during the Normandy campaign. The first occurred between 26 and 30 June, as part of Operation Epsom, when the VIII Corps was to advance southwards on the left flank of the XXX Corps, across the Odon, and capture the high ground near Bretteville-sur-Laize, south of Caen. Although crossing the river was successful, the offensive was contained by German forces around Hill 112. The second battle occurred after General Montgomery decided to wear down German troops and use the operations in the Odon sector to divert their forces. The second battle occurred between July 15 and 17, successfully keeping the 2. Panzerdivision and the 1. and 10. SS-Panzerdivisionen engaged, forcing the Germans to commit the 9. SS-Panzerdivision into battle from reserves.
