Me 109 E-3 has DB 601Aa engine with 1,200 HP. These had a stronger canopy design, armor plate in the seat and above the pilot's head. The MG 17 wing guns were replaced with MG FF 20-millimeter cannons.
Romania acquired Me 109 E-3 during December 1939. Surviving Me 109 E-3 in 1944 served 52nd Fighter Squadron.
